Year of the Snake Blog Hop

yearofthesnakeOn February 10, 2013, we say goodbye to the dragon and welcome the snake, a symbol of wisdom and cunning, but also delusion and deception.

In the spirit of the snake, I’m sharing an excerpt from Thief of Hope. Sydney is good at evasion, and there are times when it can get her into trouble.  Enjoy the read and then check out the links to the rest of the blog hop participants!

Excerpt from Thief of Hope

Wherein Sydney is forced to tell Willem some of the truth about her past

His smile suddenly faded, and he bent his head toward her. “The man by the booth across from us. He’s been staring at you.”

With a start, she recognized the man at once. Reynald was one of Zared’s acquaintances. She’d never liked the way his beady eyes watched her whenever Zared wasn’t paying attention. Now he stared at her, eyes wide.

“Dammit.” Keeping her face blank, she touched Willem’s elbow. “Let’s go. Now.”

They slipped between the lanes of the market to the empty side streets. Sydney scanned the square. No one pursued them. She swore under her breath. The guard discouraged people from openly selling fantasia in public, so Reynald rarely came to the market. He’d be sure to tell Zared he’d seen her. She swore again.

“He recognized you. Who is he?”

She continued walking. “No one. Just a friend of Zared.”

“Zared?”

Sydney drew in a long breath to calm the panic within her. I don’t need him any more. I’ve moved on. She clenched her trembling hands. She yearned to be free of him. Free of her old life.

“Who’s Zared? Do these people pose a threat to us?”

His piercing blue-eyed gaze seemed to read the thoughts she struggled to hide. “Not sure. They might.”

“No more lies, Sydney. I want the truth. All of it.”

“It’s my problem…not yours.”

“You still don’t understand, do you? Your problems affect the success of our mission.” He moved toward her, close enough to see the blond stubble on his chin. “This isn’t a jaunt around town going to the market and picking pockets. Either you tell me what I need to know now, or I can no longer trust you.”

“All right.” Her heart thumped in her chest. She dared not lose her chance to help Willem’s cause. And she dared not lose his respect. Her feelings for Willem were becoming more than loyalty to the man who would one day be her king.

She stepped back, taking another deep breath. “I’ve known Zared for a while. You could say he’s more than an acquaintance. At least at first. Things changed and I—”

Willem held up a hand. “No need to go into detail. Just tell me what’s important to us right now.”

“Zared may have turned me over the Guild. I’m not certain.”

“Why do you think it was Zared who turned you in?”

“Someone told the guards where I was. Could have been Zared. I ain’t sure.”

“He’s searching for you?”

“He went to Anaria,” she admitted. “He shouldn’t even think I’m alive.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this before, Sydney?”

“I didn’t think it was important.”

He took off his hat and kneaded his forehead. “Everything slowing us down is important. Does Zared work for the Guild? Or for Schrammig? Your feelings for him are a dangerous distraction.”

“My feelings are none of your concern.” She balled her fists. “I can deal with Zared. Trust me.”

“I can’t trust you unless you’re honest with me.”

She’d told him enough. Too much perhaps. “Willem, I’m telling the truth this time. I promise.”

“I suppose you’re also going to tell me Old Market Street is on the way to our destination?”

“It’s right near the Black Dog. We can give the money to Betty and still have plenty of time to meet with the resistance.”

Willem adjusted his hat and pulled down the brim. “Very well. But if we run across your friend Zared, I’ll handle the situation.”

They continued on. Every so often, she glanced over her shoulder, afraid they were being tracked. Zared was certainly not the worst of their problems, but, as Willem pointed out, he could be a dangerous distraction.

I’m doing a a Rafflecopter giveaway of an ebook of Thief of Hope.

Blogger Book Fair Day 4: Interview with Tammie Clarke Gibbs

Day 4, final day of the Blogger Book Fair! Don’t forget to leave a comment and be in the running for a $10 Amazon gift card. Today I have an interview with Tammie Gibbs, author of Island of Secrets, Keeping Secrets, and Sworn to Secrecy.

1. Which books/authors have most influenced you as an author and why?

I love Jude Deveraux books because she was the first author I read that transported me through time. I love time travel novels and I guess that’s why I enjoy writing them.  I also love Lynn Kurland’s books. Both of these authors have familial connections that link many of their books. Kurland not only writes about time travel, but also infuses her books with the most adorable ghosts.

2. If you could meet one of your favorite fictional characters, who would you choose and why?

Morgan from my work in progress because she is just too funny.

3. What fictional world would you most like to visit?

I’d love to visit other times…as long as I could easily get back.

4. What advice would you give your pre-published self, knowing what you know now?

Act sooner rather than later and have enough confidence in yourself.

His best friend, Asahel, defies authority at his side, unaware that the search for this lost magic will bring them both to the edge of reason, threatening their very souls. The Universal Mirror shows how far two men are willing to go for the sake of knowledge and what they will destroy to obtain it.

Blogger Book Fair Day 3: Interview with Rebecca Hamilton

A fun interview with Rebecca Hamilton, author of The Forever Girl and Her Sweetest Downfall.

1. Which books/authors have most influenced you as an author and why?

I think Nancy Pickard and Marisa de los Santos inspire me most. Reading Nancy Pickard novels has given me insight on building suspense and mystery (two things I think every writer should do, even if (like me) they don’t write suspense of mystery novels!) She uses two POV-shifting techniques in particular that cannot usually be done well, but with such a concise method to her madness that it’s extremely effective and sensible. Marias de los Santos inspires me because she has a way of breaking the “rules” that makes her writing whimsical and light. I think both of these authors show why some authors can break the rules and still be best sellers. It’s all in how they do it. Most writers know you can break the rules if you do it right; Marisa de los Santos and Nancy Pickard both showed me what “doing it right” looks like.

2. If you could meet one of your favorite fictional characters, who would you choose and why?

Oh, that’s a toughie. I don’t often think of fictional characters in that way. There was only one time I thought that, and even mentioned it in one of my reviews (because it’s always been a popular question I’ve never been able to answer). But now I can’t remember which book that was. Pregnancy has stolen a few of my brain cells.

3. What fictional world would you most like to visit?

I don’t have an answer for this, either! But I’d love to be immortal, so anywhere where that is possible and I wouldn’t get killed trying for it would be nice 🙂

4. What advice would you give your pre-published self, knowing what you know now?

BEWARE! lol. j/k. Focus on your fans. Write for them. Don’t try to please everyone or you’ll please no one.

5. We apparently dodged a bullet and avoided the Mayan apocalypse in 2012. But as they say, “winter is coming.” What three things do you want to have on hand when the Others come down from beyond the Wall?

A taco, a time machine, and all the people I love and care about.

Her Sweetest Downfall is a short story/novella of 30,000 words. This is not a novel/full-length read, but works as a companion novel to THE FOREVER GIRL, Rebecca Hamilton’s bestselling paranormal fantasy debut.

Ophelia’s been successful at hiding her true identity, until the mark of the serpent appears on her neck—a death sentence, should it be seen by anyone in her town. Hiding the mark might save her from falling victim to the witch hunts of her era, but the scorching sensation it carries can’t be ignored.

When the mysterious Ethan is sent to collect her for a life of something more, she learns concealing the mark is the least of her worries. She’s destined to don a new mask—to join a dark, supernatural world and protect the future of people she may never meet.

What she doesn’t know—what she learns too late—is that her initiation won’t be complete until she kills the man she loves.

Set in an alternate Regency England, “Her Sweetest Downfall” is a standalone novella in the “Forever Girl” series, written as a gift to fans of the Forever Girl series.

HER SWEETEST DOWNFALL will appeal to lovers of paranormal romance, fantasy, and vampire fiction.

At twenty-two, practicing Wiccan Sophia Parsons is scratching out a living waiting tables in her Rocky Mountain hometown, a pariah after a string of unsolved murders with only one thing in common: her.

One of them is a man named Charles, who Sophia falls for despite her better judgment. He has connections that might help her unveil the mystery surrounding her ancestor’s hanging, but she gets more than she bargains for when she finally decides to trust him.

Survival in his world, she learns, means not asking questions and staying out of the immortal council’s way. It’s a line she crossed long ago. If Sophia wants to survive the council and save the people she loves, she must accept who she is, perform dark magic, and fight to the death for her freedom.

Blogger Book Fair Day 3: Interview with Michael Cargill

Moving onto Day 3 of the Blogger Book Fair! Still more great books to be found. Don’t forget to check the main site for more giveaways, events, and new books to discover.

Today I have an interview with Michael Cargill, author of Underneath.

Underneath

Look at the person sitting just across from you. It doesn’t matter whether they’re a loved one, a friend, or a complete stranger.

Now look at their face. Are they happy? Are they sad? Or are they angry? Can you even tell?

How well do you actually know the people closest to you?

Have you ever seen the real person that lies just underneath what you see…?

1. Which books/authors have most influenced you as an author and why?

Without a doubt, Stephen King has been my greatest influence.  In school I was mostly reading the Dragonlance fantasy books, and purely by chance I read Pet Semetary when I was about 16 which just blew me away.  His main strength is his ability to create great characters that feel very lifelike.  He knows how to make you ‘feel’ the characters without too much hand holding, and there is always just the right amount of humour as well.

2. If you could meet one of your favorite fictional characters, who would you choose and why?

I’m sitting here thinking “Erm, I dunno” for this one.  Maybe Leland Gaunt, the shop owner from Needful Things.  He’s never out of stock of the things that you really need, which would be handy if I was holding the World Slinky Championships on my stairs and someone’s ‘linky went on the blink.

Batman is pretty cool, so meeting him would be great.  Thing is, I’d be tempted to steal something from his belt and a clip round the ear from Bats would be like getting hit with a hammer.

3. What fictional world would you most like to visit?

Definitely not Gotham City, ‘cos it’s a complete dump, it always seems to be raining, and it reminds me of London.  How about… Middle Earth?  Gandalf is supposed to be a powerful wizard, yet he doesn’t cast so much as a single fireball.  I reckon I could steal everything from his belt before he even knew what was going on, the silly old duffer.

4. What advice would you give your pre-published self, knowing what you know now?

One word: plastics.  No, wait, that’s from The Graduate.  I would actually tell my silly, younger self to take proof-reading more seriously.  As in, it isn’t possible to do it all yourself.  The amount of errors that an author simply can’t see is staggering.

5. We apparently dodged a bullet and avoided the Mayan apocalypse in 2012. But as they say, “winter is coming.” What three things do you want to have on hand when the Others come down from beyond the Wall?

Something that can be used to freeze the oceans, and a pair of ice skates to use to travel across the ice.  A Kindle would keep me entertained until the battery ran out.  I’d be like a really crap version of the Silver Surfer.
