Haunting reads

ravenFall is here. There’s a chill in the air (maybe, since the weather keeps going from hot to cold here), leaves are turning red and gold, and the nights are growing longer. Halloween will be here in less than a day. I have candy and pumpkins at the ready. And nothing says Halloween like a spooky read. Here are a few old and new favorites.

The Girl With All the Gifts: I don’t read a lot of zombie books, but this one is really different. I’d say it’s more of a literary zombie tale. Very unique. And it will make you think long after you’ve finished it.

Ghosts by Gaslight: This is a collection of spooky short stories. If you like gothic, Victorian reads, check this one out. Some stories were better than others, but I found a few gems.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children: Not necessarily scary, but it does have a fantastical, creepy vibe. I haven’t seen the movie but really enjoyed the book.

The October Country: My first introduction to Ray Bradbury and still one of my favorites. Lots of spine-tingling creepiness here. “The Emissary” and “Uncle Einar” are still memorable after all these years.

Dracula’s Brood: You can’t go wrong with classic vampire tales!

Interview with a vampire author

Critique partner and friend Vic Brown is riding high on the recent publication of his first novel, Vampire Resurrection. If you are a vampire fan, you will want to check out a new and interesting take on the genre. Vic was kind enough to do an author interview, but first let’s find out about his book.

25224222

Lamar Bradford, wealthy owner of Coleson Manor, is a third generation offspring of a polluted blood line, and the gene for vampirism that he carries in his DNA has just been triggered. Morgan Summers, a 325-year-old vampire, who was forced to watch her mother pressed to death as a witch in Salem Village in 1692, is searching for the key to mortality. Lamar has it, but it comes at a high price. Stalked by a sinister and clandestine arm of the Roman Catholic Church—the Order of the Vampire Final Solution–the OVFS has tracked down and killed fifty-seven vampires since its inception in 1925. Morgan Summers is to be their fifty-eighth conquest, with Lamar soon to follow. But there is hope. Dr. James Heller, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science is also Director of Harvard’s Genetics Laboratory. Heller’s scientists are desperately working on a gene-splicing technique that would provide resurrection for vampires—a return to mortality and humanity. Will Lamar and Morgan defeat the OVFS and those trying to destroy them? But more importantly, can a secret resurrection project succeed to save others trapped by the vampire gene?

Author Interview

Q: Where were you born? Are you the kind of person who likes to move around a lot, or do you prefer to live in one place?

A: I was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Silver Spring, MD from the age of four until age twenty-two. During a 30-year career in the USAF, I moved a lot, but since retiring, have lived in three locations in Maryland and for the last three years, we have lived in Williamsburg, VA (for our “Fourth Trimester”).

Q: What sparked your interest in writing? How long have you been writing?

A: I wrote my first fiction—a short story—in the 6th grade and have loved to write ever since. I have written 72 articles for publication in a monthly jazz club newsletter, a lifetime of non-fiction during my USAF career, a filing drawer crammed with short stories, a novella, three novels, a memoir and various other bits. Am working on another novel, the sequel to one published in March 2015—Vampire Resurrection (available at AMAZON). I have been writing for over 60 years.

Q: Your novel, Vampire Resurrection, describes a unique take on vampires. Why vampires?

A: After a vineyard full of rejections, I decided to go against the “rules” and write to the market. Vampires form a strong nitch market. I had read or watched very little vampire-related material, but I chanced to read a long article on gene-splicing in the Health and Science section of the Washington Post and the idea for a novel flashed through me. Vampires who wanted to become normal, mortal human beings through having their DNA altered. I tried the opening chapter and was enroute to creating a completely new approach to vampirism.

Q: How long did it take you to finish it? How many drafts did you write before you were satisfied?

A: It took me about six months to create the first draft. Critiquing, editing, rewriting took almost another year. I worked on each chapter as if it was a standalone work, so it is hard to put a number to how many drafts I created before it went to press.

Q: How would you describe your path toward publication?

A: Long, meandering, frustrating, and challenging! One of the significant factors in the game is LUCK. I attended a course in writing in Virginia Beach. The literary agent and CEO of High Tide Publications, Inc. attended. They offered to listen to “elevator pitches,” and I pitched both of them. They asked for my first three chapters, then the whole novel (which wasn’t quite finished yet). They sent me a contract and I was graduated from writer to published author. I was glad I had not self-published my vampires.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

A: Aspiring writers are inundated with advice, and I hesitate to try to add anything. But for those who are not trying to make a living from their writing I would add this to their pile of advice: Never lose your love of writing because of the process. Getting published is not the be-all or end-all of life. Creativity is. So be creative. Have a large basket at hand, and fill it with faith. During your journey, ENJOY, work hard on the craft, practice telling stories, and try your hand at poetry— at least read some. A dash of poetry in your work is like a dash of nutmeg on a pumpkin pie. Mingle with writers/editors as often as possible. Their good stuff can and will rub off on you.

Q: Name a few authors who have inspired you and describe why.

A: Favorite authors. First, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series for everything: plotting, characterization, research, dialogue, love scenes, you name it. Next, Jean Auel’s series beginning with The Clan of the Cave Bear for her extraordinary creativity, the treatment of animals, prolific sex scenes, and the brilliance of her fictional world, and C. S. Forrester for his series, Horatio Hornblower. He is the Father, the Dean, the best of the storytellers of adventures at sea in the 18th and very early 19th centuries.

Q: What are you currently writing?

A: I am currently writing the sequel to Vampire Resurrection. The working title is Vampire Renaissance.

Q: Coffee, tea, or hard liquor? (or all three?)

A: Coffee by the gallon. Distilled spirits (sounds better than “hard liquor”) as a reward after a long, hard day at the parchment, quill in hand.

Q: What books are you currently reading or on your to-be-read list?

A: The two on top of a tall, quivering pile: The Pagan Lord by Bernard Cornwell (another favorite author!), and Duty, by Robert M. Gates (non-fiction).

Q: And now for the bonus fluff question: If you could be a character in your one of your favorite novels, which character would you be and why?

A: If I could be a character in one of my favorite novels, who would I choose? I shall interpret your question as pertaining to a novel that I have written. And that would be Yost. (I only gave him the one name.) He was a knight in the year 1402. I selected him for his cunning, his courage, and his wise choice of a woman. My favorite genre is Historical Fiction (not vampires). I have written a novella and two novels in the HF genre.

About Vic:

Vic BrownBorn in Washington, D.C., Charles V. Brown wrote his first fiction short story in the fifth grade. He still has it; in fact, it is reproduced in his as-yet-to-be-published memoir, Sleeve an’ Me.
For years a dabbler in fiction, he allowed a thirty year Air Force career and an advanced degree, along with raising two daughters, three horses, breeding English Setters, playing innumerable Dixieland Jazz gigs, and a tour in Nam to get in the way of writing. His second novel, Viking Lady, won grand prize in the Maryland Writer’s Association’s annual novel contest, and then he got serious about writing.  After seventy-two years as a Marylander, Vic and Jenny moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, and rescued a cat–Crickett (with two ts!).  Vic still plays jazz and writes and critiques and basks in the warmth of a mighty-nice place to live: Windsor Meade.

Cover reveal: The Demon Mistress by Jordan Rose

The Demon Mistress

What’s a girl to do when she discovers her husband, who happens to be the Master Vampire for the New England Region, has been lying to her for, oh, say a hundred and eighty years?

Well, it all depends. If she’s accidentally released forty demons from some creepy old book, unintentionally announced the existence of vampires on The Internet, kidnapped a werewolf, enraged a lovesick vampire by stealing his approved mate, and attracted the attention of The High Commander for The Vampire Federation, not to mention gotten stoned and mastered the forbidden art of demon calling, she might be willing to call it even.

Or, she might plead her case at an Inquisition and hope like all hell, she isn’t staked before sunrise. Eh, a slightly busier night than usual, but nothing Eva Prim can’t handle.

JordanKRoseAbout the author:

Jordan loves vampires. But if you know anything about Jordan, you already knew that detail. What you didn’t know was it wasn’t long ago that she began writing about them.

A few years back Jordan received a copy of Twilight from her husband as part of her anniversary gift. By the end of that week she’d read the entire series and moved onto Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Eight weeks and eighteen vampire books later the idea for her first book, Perpetual Light came to her followed very quickly by Eva Prim.

In October  2013, The Demon Mistress, the first Eva Prim Novel, will be available along with four short stories. For continual updates on Eva, please join the Snack Of The Week Club at http://www.evaprim.com.

Coming November 2013: Black Magic Rose, Book One of The Alliance Series. Join Jordan’s newsletter for updates.

Jordan is a member of the national Romance Writers of America organization and several chapters.

When she’s not writing about one vampire or another, Jordan enjoys spending time with her husband, Ken, and their lovable Labrador, Dino, on the beautiful beaches of New England.

Author Interview: M.L. Guida

I’m very excited to be participating in the Blogger Book fair and for being a guest author on Cindy Young-Turner’s blog. I’m a paranormal romance writer and write both historical and contemporary romance. The supernatural has always fascinated me and I fell in love with vampires at a very young age. Something about a hot guy sucking on your neck, mmmmm. I wonder why?

1. Which books/authors have most influenced you and why?

There are so many authors that I have influenced me and I will name of few. Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon have influenced me based on their world building. They took vampires and created a new vision rather than relying on the same traditional story.

Based on their trail blazing, I was able to create my own world of vampirism. Instead of being bitten and being turned, my vampires are created by drinking from a cursed lake and turn into vampires during every full moon.

My new book, A Pirate’s Curse, is on sale for .99 on Amazon during this tour. Find out if Kane can break the vampire curse.

2.  If you could meet one of your fictional characters who would you choose and why?

I’d choose my hero, Kane O’Brien. He’s honorable, determined and flawed. He feels responsible for his crew being cursed and vows to make them human again, but turning over an innocent girl to a demon isn’t something he’s willing to do. Vowed to find another way, he’s not afraid to challenge the forces of evil. Someone I’d want to have around when I’m frightened. Every time there’s a full moon, I think of Kane.

 3. What fictional world would you like to visit?

Besides Kane’s world, I’d want to visit Dean Winchester’s world. By watching the series Supernatural, I learned how to write about touch male characters and how they deal with internal and external conflict. I love the battle between the brothers, and the fierce loyalty they have between each other. One of my favorite episodes is with Madison. She’s a woman turned into a werewolf and Sam tries to find a way to cure her, but in the end, Dean and Sam have to admit defeat. The ending is emotional and although not a HEA, its still one of my favorite episodes. I won’t give the ending away.

I have to admit one of these days I’ll have to use Madison in a story. I love that name. Perhaps, Dean and Sam, too.

 4. What advice would you give your pre-published self, knowing what you do know?

I’d tell myself think out of the box. There are many different paths to getting published and putting all your hopes into one chest leads to disappointment. When I first started, I wanted to get an agent and be published by the big six. The big six publishers are not the only catch out there. There are other ways to be published and pursuing these other paths is exciting. Maybe some day, I’ll try to get an agent and land a lucrative contract, but for right now, I like throwing my hand into self-publishing and small presses. So, my advice would be—take a risk. Don’t be afraid to take an alternative road.

5. Waiting for the next season of Games of Thrones is a challenge, but now is the time to prepare. What three things do you want to have one hand when the Others come down from the Wall?

I have to admit I’ve not watched this show. I know groan, groan. But I can list three things. You’ll have to tell me if they would work.

  1. Dean Winchester
  2. Sam Winchester
  3. The Colt.

I figure the brothers would be able to figure out what to do with anything supernatural and well, the Colt can kill anything supernatural. I’m anxious to watch the next season of Supernatural!

MaryGuida-web 1 (5 of 5)M.L. Guida lives in Colorado near the Rocky Mountains. She loves to take her cocker spaniel, Sadie, for walks on the trails behind her house. The supernatural has already interested M.L. and even as young girl, she’d read Alfred Hitchock’s Three Young Investigators, her favorite being the Mystery of the Green Ghost.

Today, she continues to love the superantural and one of her favorite shows is Supernatural. Yes, she’s a Sam and Dean Winchester fan. Her favorite monster has to be a vampire and after reading Dracula and Ann Rice’s vampire series, fell in love with vampires. She also loves to write about angels and demons, the constant battle between bad and good.

M.L. Guida just finished obtaining her Master of Arts in Creative Writing and now currently, has two masters. The other being in a Master of Social Work.

She currently is writing for Passion in Print with her Angels of Death series and has a contract with Lyrical Press and will be releasing a new paranormal novella in March 2014. She is currently working on her new Legends of the Soaring Phoenix and plans to release the first novel in the summer of 2013.

She is a member of Colorado Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America.
